Unmanned Assault on United Nations Facility in War-Torn Sudan Kills 6 UN Personnel
A unmanned attack targeted a UN logistics base in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, causing the loss of six UN soldiers, as stated by a declaration.
The incident occurred at a peacekeeping logistics base in the city of Kadugli, located in the mid-country region of Kordofan.
Eight additional personnel were hurt in the strike. All the those affected are citizens of Bangladesh, serving in the UN interim security force for Abyei (Unisfa).
“Assaults aimed at UN personnel may constitute international crimes under global statutes,” it was declared, urging the perpetrators for the “unjustifiable” attack to be prosecuted.
Military Accuses Fighter Faction
The government forces blamed the incident on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a notorious paramilitary group that has been engaged in conflict with the government troops for dominance over the country for more than two years.
The attack “clearly reveals the subversive tactics of the rebel militia and its backers,” the army said in a statement.
Context of the Disputed Region
The oil-rich Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the peacekeeping force has been stationed there since 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan.
Calls for an swift truce in Sudan were also issued to allow “a broad, all-encompassing and locally driven dialogue” to address the conflict.
Nation Plunged into Conflict Since 2023
Sudan was engulfed in chaos in April 2023 when a dispute for control between the army and the RSF exploded into full-scale combat in the capital, Khartoum and elsewhere the country.
- The war has taken more than 40,000 people, a figure human rights organizations believe a major underestimate.
- Recent combat has centred on Kordofan, especially since the RSF captured El Fasher.
- The conflict has destroyed towns and has been characterized by horrors, including systematic rape and killings based on ethnicity.
- These acts have been called international crimes by the UN and rights groups.
- The war has also precipitated the planet's most severe humanitarian crisis and pushed parts of the country into famine.
