The esteemed football figure has declared that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be difficult to duplicate the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

The former coach expressed his plan to channel his attention toward working with the youth and addressing what he described as a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Beyond The Sport

During a broadcast discussion, the manager was asked about rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

A Passion for Role Models

Leading up to the release of his new title, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate shared that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his period as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader believes that his time coaching England, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, the coach remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Discord

The former manager asserted that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the societal attention often emphasizes disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s forthcoming book, Dear England, is set to offer further insights on leadership and national identity drawn from his remarkable time in football.
