One of Avatar's most beloved episodes gets its own Magic: The Gathering collector's set.
Typically, clip shows are disliked from viewers as an unnecessary waste of time, or perhaps accepted as essential for shows during the period of regular broadcasts. However, this wasn't the case, but Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it via "The Ember Island Players," a cherished installment in its last season now being granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.
Details regarding the special release
The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was revealed on November 4. It features five distinct sets, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is certainly funny homage to the series' most famous minor character, the additional releases appear slightly uninspired, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by the seventeenth episode of the third season of the animated show, this Secret Lair features these specific cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
Why this installment stands out
Fans of Avatar clearly recall this episode, which acted as a recap of Aang and the group's adventure prior to the final episode. In contrast to other recap episodes, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" did not stem by budget restrictions or creative challenges. The creators truly wanted to give fans a moment to recap the overall plot, but they decided to approach it inventively.
During the installment, the heroes view a theatrical performance inspired by their exploits at a playhouse set on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, cheesy, and overall hilarious. It excels since it plays with the characters' perception about themselves, setting them against with how the world (and particularly the Fire Nation) views them. It possesses the perfect balance of introspective humor, and it ends up perhaps the finest interpretation of the series we have had.
Value and availability
In terms of value, this offers a fantastic Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card is valued between $20 and $40 through card retailers as of now, and for $29.99 you can acquire the full set, or for $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender set will be available during early access events starting November 14 and releases worldwide on November 21.
