My feeling was I got a touch - Alex Carey on review reprieve.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he believed he had nicked the ball when he was given not out on DRS during day one of the 3rd Ashes Test against the English.
Following his reprieve on 72, Carey crafted a superb 106 to help the Australians reach 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.
What happened?
The home side were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
England lodged a strong appeal, certain they had detected an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
After skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the on-field call, the footage examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike however this registered before the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a space between bat and ball.
As a result, Carey was given not out.
"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the series after a number of dubious moments.
Bowling coach David Saker suggested England may pursue this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's the situation."
Personal Milestone
Carey's century was his first in Test cricket against England.
It was also an heartfelt moment for Carey, whose dad died in recent months. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batter celebrated by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," stated Carey.
"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."
Not New to Furore
Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.
He was the keeper who notoriously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.
On his reprieve he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
