In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in a long wait. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he says.
The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. “Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the senior squad but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then go home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
