A familiar auction figure is a well-known face at the yearly event.

A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants across the country and abroad.

"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," stated the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the annual January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Past

After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition exceeds his previous notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which stated the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied patron.
