Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
